Fire Safety Systems Review

The primary line of defense for any structure is a smoke detector. A smoke detector should not be confused with a fire detector. A fire detector only goes off once the temperature in a room elevates high enough to signify a fire. Once this happens, the fire may have already grown to a point where the occupants are in danger. A smoke detector is different; it sounds an alarm once there is even a slight amount of smoke present. This enables occupants the opportunity to escape before the fire has spread to dangerous levels. There are two main types of smoke detectors, a photoelectric detector and an ionization detector.A photoelectric detector is generally more expensive, and uses a small light bulb or LED light in a T shape directed at a diode that detects the constant source of light. Once this light is interfered with, as the presence of smoke will do, the alarm goes off. The ionization works by maintaining an electric current through americium. A tiny particle of smoke will interfere with this current and will set off the alarm.


Another type of fire safety is the fire sprinkler unit. The sprinkler system usually is used in larger buildings where a fire could have already spread in one area before a smoke detector could raise the alarm in another. These sprinklers have been in use in most large buildings for over fifty years and have saved thousands of lives by containing the spread of fires before they getout of control.

Fire sprinkler systems operate primarily through the use of a heat sensitive glass bulb. The bulbs come in an assortment of heat allowances to be applicable to a variety of fields. Ordinary glass bulbs are created to begin operation at temperatures as subtle as one hundred thirty-five degrees. Other bulbs, primarily for industrial use don’t start operation until around six hundred fifty degrees Fahrenheit. The bulbs work to curtain the flow of water until they burst. They burst by the heat expansion of a liquid on the interior. The advantage to using this type of sprinkler system is that it enables individual sprinklers to operate as needed, instead of setting off the entirety of the building by way of a system of valves and pipes. The bulbs are color coded for easy use and quick installation.
