Most buildings throughout the country have some sort of fire safety regulations that must be met in before being occupied. These fire regulations of course differ in locations and with the size of the building, but in the United States and in most of the industrialized world, you can be assured that the building you are in has met at least basic fire safety regulations.

The primary line of defense for any structure is a smoke detector. A smoke detector should not be confused with a fire detector. A fire detector only goes off once the temperature in a room elevates high enough to signify a fire. Once this happens, the fire may have already grown to a point where the occupants are in danger. A smoke detector is different; it sounds an alarm once there is even a slight amount of smoke present. This enables occupants the opportunity to escape before the fire has spread to dangerous levels. There are two main types of smoke detectors, a photoelectric detector and an ionization detector.A photoelectric detector is generally more expensive, and uses a small light bulb or LED light in a T shape directed at a diode that detects the constant source of light. Once this light is interfered with, as the presence of smoke will do, the alarm goes off. The ionization works by maintaining an electric current through americium. A tiny particle of smoke will interfere with this current and will set off the alarm.

Another type of fire safety is the fire sprinkler unit. The sprinkler system usually is used in larger buildings where a fire could have already spread in one area before a smoke detector could raise the alarm in another. These sprinklers have been in use in most large buildings for over fifty years and have saved thousands of lives by containing the spread of fires before they getout of control.

Fire sprinkler systems operate primarily through the use of a heat sensitive glass bulb. The bulbs come in an assortment of heat allowances to be applicable to a variety of fields. Ordinary glass bulbs are created to begin operation at temperatures as subtle as one hundred thirty-five degrees. Other bulbs, primarily for industrial use don’t start operation until around six hundred fifty degrees Fahrenheit. The bulbs work to curtain the flow of water until they burst. They burst by the heat expansion of a liquid on the interior. The advantage to using this type of sprinkler system is that it enables individual sprinklers to operate as needed, instead of setting off the entirety of the building by way of a system of valves and pipes. The bulbs are color coded for easy use and quick installation.

Fire safety detection and suppression systems are critical for the safety of any building.

One thing is for certain, a fire can have a devastating effect on residences or businesses. The consequences of a blaze, whether in a private residence or place of business, are frequently tragic and, although the number of occurrences and harshness, of them has gone down in the past decades, they still occur all too often. Thus, the deterrence and response to fires is something to be taken seriously, especially in the commercial and industrial sectors where local codes mandate that certain measures be enacted. Fire protection has three main parts which are passive fire protection, active fire protection, and education. Although all three play a necessary part in making sure people and property secure, only the first two segments feature items which businesses must employ to keep their buildings up to code.

Passive fire protection involves products used in the making of walls and floors which help control the blaze and make it possible for those who fight fires to extinguish it. While these items are essential, they frequently aren’t ones that the company must buy after construction is complete. The products associated with active fire protection, however, are needed after the building is completed and perform a different end. Sprinkler systems are possibly the most well known product in active fire protection and picking out the best one will go a long way toward taking care of your business. A company with expertise in manufacturing every valve that is part of the system will give you a better capability for fire suppression. The engineering proficiency of the company supplying the sprinkler system should be impeccable so that if a fire does happen, the amount of loss is curbed. Additionally, the monitoring and alarm systems that go along with this product is significant as well. If the chance of a fire isn’t observed in time then the chance of the blaze causing lots of damage is much more likely.

Its true that every business has the similar goals with regard to fire protection, their requirements might be a little bit different. For instance, a company which operates a huge, ten story structure will certainly not use the same system as a company which only uses a two story building. Consequently, choosing a company which offers a wide range of options will ensure that your fire protection requirements are met. Finally, take the time to also consider the other products that coordinate with sprinkler systems such as backflow solutions, cabinets, gauges, and gauge kits. Having knowledge of what type and how many of these components will greatly take care of your companys invaluable resources.

Reasons Why You Should Get Fire Extinguisher Cabinets

We have different means of organizing our things. In every room, we find a space where we can freely drop off our things or just let them settle, every time you come by. For example, when your kids play inside the living room, they usually scatter their toys around. Since they will still play on that area the next day, it is better to store them in toy chests or boxes. That way, they know where to get their stuff when they want to play with the same toy all over again. It will be an advantage on your part because you do not have to go through the trouble of walking on the other side of the room just to safe keep their toys.

This idea is also applicable to extinguishers. As much as possible, you want to mount them on walls. It needs to be mounted on areas that can be convenient and does not result to any form of blockage. In public places, they place them on walls and cover them with glass case. So how do you use it then in case fire happens? That is where you see the sign, ‘break the glass in case of fire’. There is also, what we call fire extinguisher cabinets. They can be made of wood with glass on front. There are several reasons why you should use these items whenever you have extinguishers. The following are:

1. Safekeeping- Most of the time, items like this are padlocked for safety. You do not want someone to play with it and use up all of its contents without the emergence of fire. If you are in a public place, no one can steal it. Even when you are at home, you still need to safe keep this so that there will be no accidental usage of the device.

2. It does not get in the way- Extinguishers are made out of metal containers. It prevents accidental knock-off. It means you can expect that none of your toes will get crushed because of tanks getting knocked out while passing by. You do not have to put your tanks on the corner just to gain quick access on it.

3. Easy Access- In emergencies, you do not want to go through the trouble of looking for the device. The unique cabinet lets you know that this is where extinguishers are kept. When fire occurs, you can conveniently open the case.

4. Blending- With these unique storage areas, you get a chance to blend in this rugged device in your beautiful room. The red colored container will not look too flashy but it can be kept at a minimal by displaying them inside this fire extinguisher cabinets. They can be even custom-made to fit your rooms perfectly.

5. Durable- There is no other way to keep your fire protecting devices than the way these cabinets are engineered. They are mountable on walls yet they can be durable and strong enough to hold your tanks. Now they do not only come in plain wood but they can be made out of rust-free materials so it can stay longer and keep your extinguishers well kept.

Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher – Firefighting Has Never Been Cool With The Coldest Fire Extinguisher

If being cold means being cool and hip, there is no doubt the carbon dioxide fire extinguisher will be coolest and hippest among extinguishers. Owing to its carbon dioxide content, this type of extinguisher is known to be dangerously cold. Necessary precaution when using carbon dioxide extinguishers. Its metal parts are usually dangerously cold, follow the instruction carefully or have someone show you how to use it.

As the name implies the extinguisher contains carbon dioxide which is a colorless and odorless gas. It is a non-flammable gas at room temperature and is the fourth most abundant gas in the Earth’s atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is as much important to plants as oxygen is to humans. Plants utilize carbon dioxide to produce its own food through photosynthesis which then give off oxygen for animals to consume.

There are other uses for carbon dioxide aside from being a major component in the food-making process of plants. It also has its commercial uses, carbon dioxide is used to carbonate beer and soft drinks. Decaffeinated coffee is produced through the process called supercritical fluid extraction which uses carbon dioxide. Likewise, dry ice which is used in theatrical productions to make artificial stage fogs is also made of carbon dioxide.

The carbon dioxide fire extinguisher is just one the uses of this important gas. This type of extinguisher is an effective deterrent to class B and class C fires. If you are wondering why carbon dioxide extinguishers do not have pressure gauges, this is because carbon dioxide is a condensable gas. You cannot tell how much agent remains in the cylinder by measuring pressure. You can tell the the amount of carbon dioxide in a cylinder by reading the tare weight stamped on it. In order to tell how much gas remains in the cylinder, you only have to subtract the tare weight form the current weight.

Anybody using a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher should be extra careful. Carbon dioxide may cause the following:

Asphyxiation – Avoid releasing gas in an unventilated area, carbon dioxide can lower the oxygen level.

Frostbite – Avoid touching any metal parts where the gas flows through.

Pressure Explosion – Make sure that carbon dioxide extinguishers are stored at room temperature. Storing the cylinders in places where the temperature is likely to increase might cause the extinguisher to explode.

Some people believe that carbon dioxide is visible, they argue that the white mist seen around solid carbon dioxide is the gas itself. This is a misconception since the white mist is not carbon dioxide but water vapor that has condensed from the air. The reason why the color of the discharge from the extinguisher is partly white is condensed water vapor and not carbon dioxide which is colorless.

What makes this type of extinguisher effective in putting out class B and class C fires is its ability to displace or remove oxygen. Likewise, carbon dioxide can dissipate heat from the fuel by its sheer coldness as it comes out from the extinguisher. Its ability to remove two elements from the fire triangle by all means makes it the coolest fire extinguisher.

12 Simple Steps To Build A Fire Extinguisher From Scratch

12 Easy Steps to Make Your Own Fire Extinguisher From Your Household Products. Fun for Experiments & Interesting for Projects!

Most people are aware of the fun volcano project kids make for school. The project generally involves creating a prehistoric scene out of dried clay or play-dough, and then filling the "volcano" with baking soda and red-colored vinegar to create a volcano science experiment. When teaching fire safety to kids, it is fun to put a spin on the same idea and create a homemade fire extinguisher! It is fitting, and fun. Here’s how:

You will need:
-An empty plastic peanut butter jar
-An empty film canister
-Baking soda
-Vinegar
-Scissors
-A bendy plastic sipping straw
-Tape

What to do:

1. Take the empty peanut butter plastic jar, and wash it thoroughly in soap and warm water, ensuring all peanut butter residue is completely gone.
2. Wash the film canister as well.
3. Dry the plastic peanut butter jar and the film canister thoroughly.
4. Fill up the film canister with baking soda.
5. Place the lid on the film canister, but do not click it shut. If possible, put it on half way; if not, just lay the lid gently on top of the canister.
6. Gently place the film canister into the empty plastic jar.
7. Fill up the plastic with vinegar, stopping just below the lid on the film canister.
8. Put the plastic jar aside.
9. Take the lid from the plastic jar and carefully punch a hole with the scissors in the center of the lid.
10. Then, slip the straw through the hole in lid. Make sure the bottom of the straw will extend about 2 to 3 inches into the jar, and not go past the lid of the film canister.
11. Next, carefully tape the straw into place. Be careful to make it airtight and leak-proof.
12. Put the lid on the peanut butter jar tightly, and tape around the edges to make sure it is airtight as well.

Now for the fun: simply shake the plastic jar, and point the straw to "extinguish" the fire. (Watch where you point it…it can be quite messy. If you are able to do this experiment outside, it is even better. The residue can easily be washed off with a garden hose or bucket of warm water)

Now for the science part: the elements of fire are oxygen, fuel, and heat. If you take away one of these aspects, there is no way a fire can last. The vinegar and baking soda produce a chemical reaction in which the foam eliminates oxygen. If this reactive substance is directed at a flame, it helps eliminate the oxygen, thus aiding in extinguishing the fire.

Please note, however, that this should not be used in place of a real fire extinguisher and that you should be aware of the proper fire safety equipment. The amount of carbon dioxide and water produced in this reaction is not sufficient to completely extinguish a fire. It does, however, make for a fun idea to teach children about the science of fire and home fire safety.

Car Fire Extinguisher – Preliminary Remedy For Car Fires

A car fire is currently one common cause of fire-related property damage in the US today. About one motor vehicle in every two minutes catches a fire in the country. In the United Kingdom, the incidence of accidental fires are slowly lessening yet arson cases are on the rise. Most of car fire incidences in the UK are deliberate since joyriders tend to set stolen cars on fire. Furthermore, abandoned cars are usually set on fire by vandals. It is no surprise that two cars out of every registered one thousand cars catch fire each year in the United Kingdom.

In order to avoid the occurrences of these car fires, it is wise to keep a car fire extinguisher in your car. A motor vehicle is a fire-magnet since it has so many hazardous elements in it which can catch and cause fire. It contains many types of flammable fuel like gasoline and oil. Aside from this, it also contains solid combustibles like the car upholstery and detonators in airbag systems. A car’s electrical wiring is a major source of ignition in the cases of short circuits. Leakages of fuel to hot exhaust system is another source of fire in the car. Another common cause of car fires is faulty fuel lines which leads to fuel leaks. Car batteries are also fire hazards since the hydrogen gas resulting from the electrolysis reaction ignites swiftly in a fire which can lead to an explosive release of battery acid.

Even electric and hybrid cars aren’t exceptions to the risk because these cards have large batteries composed of either NiMH, Li-ion, or lead-acid. Aside from the possibility of an electric shock, these batteries can explode or leak. Because of a good possibility of this from happening, these cars have built-in safety features to safeguard it from fire such as temperature sensors, smoke detectors, and overcharge protection. Yet even with these safety features, it is still important to have a car fire extinguisher nearby so that a preliminary stop is applied to the fire. Often, passengers inside the car have the opportunity to get out of the car in the event of a fire because a bulk of the fire is initially contained in the engine compartment. The passenger compartment is protected from the engine through a firewall.

In the event of a car fire, there are some steps you should follow. If your vehicle is moving slowly during a fire, politely signal and pull over immediately. Then, shut off the engine, go out of the vehicle and try to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher. Keep onlookers away and warn oncoming traffic. Notify emergency services as soon as possible and if the fire is beyond your control, stay far from it. Car fires are dangerous because of the toxic fumes that are emitted by it. Toxic inhalation is the most common form of fire-related death.

The use of a fire extinguisher on a car fire should be as such by discharging it through the gap created by releasing the hood. Opening the hood of the car should be avoided because it can make the fire bigger.

In 2004, the 410 thousand residential fires in America caused more than 14 thousand injuries and 3 thousand deaths, according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). You can prevent fire-related deaths and injuries, and even most residential fires by being knowledgeable about fire safety. Ensure your and your family’s safety by creating an escape plan, teaching children fire safety and fire-proofing your home.

Fire Safety Escape Plan

A fire safety escape plan tells everyone what to do if your home catches on fire. Your family needs to discuss fire safety issues, and design an escape plan for your home. The escape plan needs to inform everyone in your family of the two safest routes out of each room in your house and where to meet once outside.

When discussing fire safety issues with your family, it is also a good idea to talk about each person’s responsibilities in the case of a fire, such as who helps whom out of the house. Be sure to explain to each family member to crawl to a safe exit; don’t stop to save anything, and, if possible, to alert others by yelling "FIRE!" or beating on doors as they crawl by.

Fire Safety and Kids

Fire safety and education begins with children. Tragically, children cause over thousands of residential fires each year, the majority stemming from children playing with matches. You need to teach your children to obey the following fire safety rules: Never play with matches or lighters, always have an adult help you when cooking, never touch gasoline or any other flammable liquids.

Always STOP, DROP, AND ROLL! If you or your clothes catch on fire. Never place anything into an electrical outlet and always get help from an adult if something catches on fire.

Your children are the most important people in your life, so educate them about fire safety and prevention.

Fire Safety and Your Home

Electrical fires are the most common type of residential fires in America. The following fire safety tips lower the probability of residential electrical fires: Don’t overload outlets or piggy-back extension cords, Keep all combustible items, such as hairspray and household cleaners, away from all heaters, Check all electrical tools and appliances for frayed or cracked cords, Purchase electrical appliances that meet the Underwriter’s Laboratory’s (UL) safety requirements and Keep children away from electrical appliances, such as heaters and irons.

Electric stoves, ovens, stereos, heaters, and clothes dryers are responsible for the majority residential electrical fires. Follow all manufacturers’ instructions, and use all appliances carefully and responsibly. Sometimes, no matter the precautionary fire safety steps you take, an electrical fire can still occur. If this happens, knowing the proper fire safety procedure is invaluable in keeping your home safe. Shut off burning appliances by unplugging the cord, Put out small fires with your home fire extinguisher, Do not put water on electrical fires, Get everyone out of the house and Do not try to handle large fires by yourself; call 911, report the fire, and tell them it is an electrical fire.

Educating yourself and your family on fire safety helps to lower your chances of a residential fire and gives you the knowledge of what to do in the case of a fire.

Fire Safety Equipment Your Family Can’t Live Without

Learn the right fire safety equipment you should have to keep your family and home safe during a fire. Know which smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are tested to work for your home. Discover other fire safety equipment that can provide an extra line of defense for you and your family.

Each home should be equipped with proper fire safety equipment. Though no one wants to think they may have a damaging fire in their home someday, it is always necessary to invest the time and money in being adequately prepared; your home and the lives of your family could be at stake. Here are some suggestions of basic home fire safety equipment that should be owned by every family.

First, the most beneficial piece of fire safety equipment is the smoke detector. At least one should be placed on each floor of the house. Most people place them in hallways (near sleeping areas and stairways), and they need to be kept a few feet down from the ceiling. Be sure to place detectors in your basement and attic as well. Also, don’t forget to test your smoke detectors regularly; you can do this easily by lighting a candle under the detector. If the alarm goes off, the detector is working. Simply fan the smoke away from the alarm to quiet the noise. Also, if your smoke alarm is battery operated, the batteries will need to be changed from time to time. When you hear the detector make a shrill chirping noise, change the batteries as soon as possible…it is all too easy to forget once the batteries die.

The next item each family should own in the way of fire safety equipment is a fire extinguisher. It is important to know that there are different fire extinguishers for different types of fires. In general, there are five different classes of fires: A, B, C, D, and K. When considering what kind of extinguisher to purchase, simply find out what kind of fire each extinguisher treats, and decide what kind is best for your family and home. Most people use a dry powder extinguisher that treats classes A, B, and C. Of course, buying multiple kinds of extinguishers is fine; one can never be too prepared! If you have children, depending on their age, direct them on how to use the extinguisher should they ever need to use it while you are away. Follow the directions on how to trigger the extinguisher, and aim at the base of the fire and guide the extinguisher in a sweeping circular motion.

Other pieces of equipment to consider purchasing are collapsible ladders. These can be easily set up in a matter of seconds, and they are helpful in case you need to escape from an upper level floor. Collapsible ladders can be purchased at almost any hardware or fire equipment supplier, and are relatively inexpensive.

Each home should be equipped with certain fire safety equipment. Though it does cost money, it can often make the difference between keeping your home or losing it to a damaging fire. Hundreds of lives are saved each year because families have purchased fire safety equipment and have prepared fire escape routes. Being prepared is the best form of fire prevention for you and your family.

Fire Extinguisher Signs: The Best Way To Indicate The Essentials Of The Device

Words can be as expressive as paintings. When combined correctly, they can depict different emotions and different pictures. It can also be powerful. It can convince people to change their views and beliefs about something. It can touch the lives of people as it can make them cry or laugh at the lines. It can be devastating as you get to know the bad news. Words either written or spoken, has helped made communication possible.

However, there are times when we need to do away with paragraphs of words to communicate. Sometimes, to describe something, it takes a lot of words to say completely what is needed to be conveyed. They can be good in giving instructions as this need to be very detailed. However, in cases when you want to make things concise and simple, you can do away with one word or none at all. Instead, you can make use of symbolisms or a combination.

Symbols and words can be very helpful in cases when you can to communicate something and make it universal. Universal here means that even if you are in another country and you cannot understand the language they have, you will still understand the indications simply by just looking at the symbols. That is why in the field of fire fighting, fire extinguisher signs are universal and it is used all over the world.

Here are some of the things that you can expect from the signs and their interpretations:

1. They involve pictures that could help the user know the classification of the extinguisher. For example, a class A extinguisher has a symbol of a red triangle with a capital A inside it. For class B, it is a red square with capital B in it. For class C, the letter C is enclosed in a blue circle.

2. They are also used to indicate what kind of fire can be used in this particular extinguisher. Some of these devices are multi-rated. They can be Class A-B or B-C. If a class A-B device can be used for ordinary combustible materials and combustible liquids, expect that you get pictograms on it showing a fire and an electrical cord with a red horizontal line on it. This means, it is not allowed for fires cause by electrical materials.

3. If your devices are kept in cabinets or discreetly stored in some areas unseen, you can use these markings to indicate its location. This is the best way to direct possible users on where to get it, especially in emergencies.

4. You can also get to know the agents used for a particular extinguisher simply by looking at the color-coding in the drawings. There are also dos and don’ts specified on these drawings for a particular agent.

A fire extinguisher sign can be a big help. In emergency situations, it can be time consuming to read paragraphs. These symbols shorten your time in trying to depicting whether this particular device is safe for usage or not.

Fire Extinguisher Boxes: Protecting Your Extinguishers As It Can Protect You.

We never cease to take care of our things especially when we know how important it is. It is not a wonder how we practice great care in all of our valuables. We make sure that they have great containers and sometimes they have special compartments that could really ensure their preservation. Your jewelries need to be placed in an upholstered container to avoid scratching it. Your laptops have a cushioned bag to reduce shock or impact of blows on the device especially when you are traveling. Even clothes or your most expensive gowns, need to be protected in special clothing bags to avoid crumpling or accidental spillage while you travel or even when it just lays there in your closet. We manage our things this way especially when you do not use them for a long time.

This is how we value things and people. In the face of firefighting devices, we also make sure that these things are well protected until such time when the situation calls for it. It is not doubt that we do not experience large-scale fires everyday. At most times, we deal with controlled fire like the flames in our kitchen our fire places. Because of this, we have to admit that these devices are not used as often. Therefore, to help preserve them, our duty is to put them in fire extinguisher boxes.

These things are important for extinguishers. It protects them from different kinds of hazards. As mentioned above, we do not use these items everyday. The best thing you can do is to find ways to minimize damage or exposure to hazards. This can increase the life span of the device and if savings is your concern, you can save yourself from buying this device from time to time. It would be very impractical.

These devices come in different sizes and materials. Protecting a pressurized tank cannot be done in paper boxes. That would not be sufficient to withstand all blows from the outside world. They are usually made out of polyethylene plastics because they are durable. It is also ideal for transportation, as you need something that is portable. It is great for keeping the device in the vehicles. Other materials are made of wood or metal. They are good for storing this device in buildings, homes and other structural designs. You can mount them on the wall; have them slightly or fully recessed. The use of fiberglass is sometimes used in here. You can also just have them standing on your closets and with these fire extinguisher boxes, you do not have to worry getting this devices knocked-off easily. With these storage devices, you can ensure that nothing will fall out, nothing is destroyed and nothing shatters easily. Sometimes, they come with locks to secure the extinguisher inside.

Therefore, as much as you care for your valuables, you can also do it to important fire fighting devices. Not only will you be happy by saving your wallets from being emptied, but also you will be even more thankful when you have the best device helping you out at times when you need it the most.

Co2 Fire Extinguisher: Your Fire-stopper For Class B Rating Of Fire We love to eat fried food. Most likely, if you are not diet conscious, you will appreciate this type of food because they are tasty but has a lot of texture in it. The best part of eating it is being able to enjoy its crisp but still juicy inside. Whether it is just pan-fried or deep-fried, food is undoubtedly very fun to eat.

Every time we fry, we use oil or fats in volumes and high heat. We need to do that in order to cook all sides evenly and quicker. Since, it usually takes time to cook fried items; our natural tendency is to leave the kitchen. Deep-fried foods are left unattended and probably one will end up busy doing something else. Note that while you are doing something, the temperature rises for your oil or grease. This can even get worse when you forgot that you have been cooking. When this happens, the tendency of your deep fryer is to combust resulting to fire. One thing about this kind of fire is that it is hard to put out. You cannot splash water because you can be smothered by it. Therefore, at times like this, you can put out fire with the use of CO2 fire extinguisher.
There are so many types of fire remedies but not all types are capable of putting out all types of fire. When it comes to this type of device, you can put out class B and C fires. In this case, you will be dealing with kerosene, grease and oils. All of these fall on class B. Therefore, using this device is your most effective means to fight fire caused by these liquids.

However, if you do not have any other equipment at home, in case this happens, the best thing to do is to use baking soda to cover the fire. Do not splash it because you might end up hurting yourself. What you can actually do is to turn of the gas and hit the base of the fire. If this does not work, the simplest remedy is to close the lid of the pan. Both of these actions have the same concept: which is to remove oxygen. Remember, oxygen is one of the aggravators of fire therefore, taking them out on this case, will kill the fire.

That is why it is very important to keep an eye on what you are cooking. You should be not be too complacent that you have your CO2 fire extinguisher at home. As much as possible, you need to protect yourself. In addition, in the process of cooking your favorite friend foods, it is not only the color of the food that you need to monitor. You also have to use your senses and your judgment in order to tell if there is too much heat on the pan already. Then you can easily turn the knob down to lower the temperature. This is also your way to eat and live safely.

Fire Extinguisher Basics

Using the right types of fire extinguisher in the proper way can keep a small fire from becoming a destructive and dangerous one. A fire in your residence can involve any one or a combination of three things: live electricity, combustible solids, or flammable liquids.

The best fire extinguishers are rated ABC, and can handle any of these type of fire. However, some extinguishers can only douse one type of fire. For example:

Class A fires are fed by combustible solids, such as paper, wood, fabric, and most plastics. Class A extinguishers use water propelled by a gas, or can be easily pumped. Foam can also put out a Class A fire.

Class B fires burn in flammable liquids such as gasoline, grease, oil and kerosene. Foam, carbon dioxide (CO2), and dry chemical Class B extinguishers are effective against these types of fires. Never use a Class A extinguisher with a Class B fire, as water will spread the flames.

Class C fires are caused by live electricity. Use a CO2 or dry chemical extinguisher on electrical fires. Never use foam or water, because you could suffer a serious shock and/or spread the fire. With the power off, Class C fires become Class A or B.

When purchasing a fire extinguisher, it should be rated by an independent testing agency such as Underwriters Laboratory (UL, or ULC in Canada). Look closely at the label for a number that indicates the capacity of its contents. The larger the number, the greater the capacity, but also the more the extinguisher will weigh. Home fire extinguishers typically weigh from 10 to 36 pounds.

Be sure to think about how many extinguishers you will need. At minimum, buy one each for the basement, garage, and kitchen. Providing a fourth for your sleeping area is highly recommended. As soon as you get the extinguisher home, read the directions in front of your family, and recheck the extinguishers monthly to make sure they are fully charged.

Mount each fire extinguisher near a doorway, no more than five feet above the floor. Keep them as far as possible from any location in which a fire could likely break out, such as a range, wood stove, or fireplace.

Keep your family safe with a home security system that is also capable of monitoring fires. You can read consumer-submitted reviews, and learn all about investing in a home security system at alarmsystemreviews.com.
